Infernal Hordes don't need another flashy DPS buff nearly as much as they need to start when you click them. Diablo 4 version 3.1.2, released July 28, 2026, is a smaller update with that exact priority: it fixes friction around one of the endgame's most repeatable loops while players are still spending D4 Gold on rerolls, upgrades, and the usual seasonal grind. As of August 1, this remains the latest live build, not a new class-meta reset.

Why Infernal Hordes got the meaningful fixes

The headline change is simple but huge in practice: certain abilities could stop an Infernal Horde from beginning. That kind of failure hurts more than a missed proc or an unlucky loot chest because it erases the whole run before the first wave properly gets going. Version 3.1.2 also clears up a Whisper icon problem that could obstruct teleporting into the activity. One issue happened on the map, the other inside the encounter; together, they targeted the two places where a Horde run could die before your build had a chance to perform.

What actually changed for repeat runs

This patch is about consistency, not power creep. You should still expect to make smart wave choices, survive dense enemy packs, keep your cooldown rhythm intact, and decide how to spend Aether at the end. But the route from selecting Infernal Hordes to collecting rewards should now be less temperamental. From what I've seen, reliability changes matter most to players who run the same activity repeatedly, because tiny interruptions become exhausting after your tenth run of the night.

Part of the run
Before 3.1.2
What the patch addresses
Map access
Whisper icon could block teleport selection
Clearer access to Infernal Hordes
Encounter opening
Some abilities could prevent the start
More dependable first-wave entry
Reward planning
Chest details could be confusing
Displayed 200 Aether Talisman cost matches use
Don't treat Aether chests as an afterthought

The practical reward angle is easy to miss. Earlier adjustments increased War Plans rewards, Gold Chest payouts rise with Aether investment, and the Chest of Talismans now correctly follows its displayed 200 Aether cost. That means the last thirty seconds of an Infernal Hordes run aren't just cleanup. They're where you convert performance into value, including resources that feed the wider Diablo 4 economy and Diablo 4 Gold spending decisions. Don't enter reward mode on autopilot after a clutch final wave.

A quick post-run routine

My advice is to make chest selection part of your loadout plan rather than a reflex. Do this, not that.

1. Check your Aether total before opening anything, instead of reacting to the first chest you see.
2. Match the reward choice to your current goal: gold for expenses, Talismans when you can meet the 200 Aether requirement, or other rewards for immediate build needs.
3. Finish the intended wave sequence, because partial clears can undermine the rewards you expected from the run.

The same reliability theme shows up elsewhere

Season of Death Awakening also receives encounter-progression repairs. A frozen Soul Eater could stop further monster spawns, a Deathtoll Chamber could end before its Soul Eater died, the Altar of Avarice could produce too many monsters, and skipping an objective could halt Cosmic Archives Stronghold progress. These aren't glamorous patch-note bullets, but they matter because Diablo 4 builds now throw out enough crowd control, summons, area damage, and movement effects to pressure scripted encounters in ways a basic test character never will.

Pit timing and Mythic inventory cleanup

The Pit's end-of-run safety bubble now appears after completion when there is no Whisper Ambush; if an ambush occurs, it waits until the ambush boss is defeated. That's a fair line: no free safety while combat remains, no needless danger once every required target is down. The patch also renames the Horadric Cube Mythic recipe from "Upgrade" to "Craft" and restores Mythic Unique recycling. Small wording changes can prevent expensive mistakes, while recycling gives unwanted Mythics a purpose beyond occupying stash space. For Infernal Hordes players, 3.1.2 is a welcome reminder that a stable loop beats a noisy patch every time.
