The wait for AION 2 is almost over. After months of anticipation, testing and changes to the global launch schedule, NCSoft's new MMORPG is now entering its final countdown.

The biggest dates are easy to remember: Founder's Pack Early Access begins September 30, 2026, while the free-to-play global launch arrives October 5. The game will launch on PC through Steam and NC's PURPLE platform.

But there is more happening around the launch than simply waiting for October 5. The recent Launch Scale Test gave players their first large-scale look at the Western version, while server capacity, class choices, progression and the Founder's Pack have all become major discussion points ahead of release.

NCSoft confirmed the global free-to-play launch during Gamescom, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the game's Western release window. The official AION 2 global site currently lists October 5, 2026 as the launch date.

Players will be able to access the global version through Steam and PURPLE. Unlike the Korean and Taiwanese versions, the global launch represents a separate service for Western players.

For anyone simply looking for when they can play without paying for early access, October 5 is the date to mark.

There is also a potentially useful Steam timing detail. Steam's current release record points to 13:00 UTC on October 5, although that specific launch hour has not been separately confirmed by NCSoft in an official announcement. It is therefore safer to treat October 5 as the confirmed date and the Steam timestamp as provisional.

AION 2 Early Access Starts September 30

Players who want to enter Atreia before everyone else can get five days of Advanced Access, beginning September 30.

The Early Access period runs through October 4 and is tied to the three AION 2 Founder's Pack editions. Importantly, all three tiers provide the same five-day head start; the more expensive versions primarily add additional rewards, cosmetics and other bonuses.

That makes AION 2 Early Access one of the most important current search topics for players deciding whether to purchase a Founder's Pack.

However, there is no need to buy one simply to play the game. AION 2 will become free-to-play when the global launch begins on October 5.

NC has also not published a confirmed opening hour for September 30, so players should avoid assuming that Early Access begins at midnight in their local time.

The Launch Scale Test Already Gave Players a Preview

Before Early Access arrives, AION 2 has already completed its most important global stress test.

The Launch Scale Test took place on September 17 and 18 and was open to players without requiring a paid Founder's Pack. The purpose was to simulate launch conditions and put pressure on the game's servers and infrastructure.

The test generated significant interest. Steam tracking data reported a peak of 73,761 concurrent players, while the figure does not include players accessing the game through PURPLE. That means the actual total audience during the test was larger than the Steam number alone.

For players who were unable to participate, however, the test should not be confused with Early Access. Test progression was wiped, and characters from the test do not carry over into the September 30 or October 5 launch.

That makes the upcoming Early Access period the first meaningful opportunity to begin permanent progression.

What Players Should Expect at Launch

AION 2 is positioning itself as a much larger evolution of the original MMORPG rather than simply a graphical remake.

The game uses Unreal Engine 5, features aerial movement and combat, and is built around a large open-world environment where players can explore vertically as well as horizontally. NCSoft has also retained the franchise's central Elyos-versus-Asmodians conflict and eight-class structure for the global version.

Recent hands-on coverage of the global build highlighted its combat and character progression while also noting that the world could sometimes feel less populated than expected during testing.

That is one of the major questions for launch: whether the much larger permanent player population will make the world feel more alive than it did during limited testing.

Server Choice Could Matter More Than Expected

Server selection is another topic worth watching when AION 2 launches.

Current global information identifies server regions including NA West, NA East, South America, Central Europe and Japan, with no simple region lock preventing players from choosing another region.

The Early Access period will also use dedicated server waves before the wider launch population arrives.

For solo players, this may not require much planning. For guilds and groups of friends, however, choosing the same faction and server before September 30 could be important.

Players who are splitting between Founder's Pack Early Access and the October 5 free launch should pay particular attention to server availability before creating their first character.

With Early Access only days away, players have a short preparation window.

First, decide whether you actually need Early Access. If five days of head start progression are important, a Founder's Pack provides access. If not, waiting until October 5 costs nothing.

Third, make sure the correct global client is installed. Steam players who participated in the Launch Scale Test were instructed to move from the test client to the main AION 2 client for launch.

Finally, don't assume that every piece of information from the Korean version applies directly to global launch. The Korean and Taiwanese services launched earlier and have progressed further, meaning their current classes, systems and content can differ from the initial global version.
